Meet the Ragtime Staff
All of us wait on customers and pitch in wherever we can, but we also have assigned responsibilities and special skills here at our employee owned and operated fabric store.
Customer service is always our first priority!

Store Manager

I have worked at Ragtime for 5 years, but I've been sewing for over 20 years.  I am mostly self taught.  My sewing mostly consists of costumes, garments and crafts, and recently I began dabbling in quilting.  When I'm not working, I'm usually at home sewing with my cat, Bithia, or I'm set up at a craft fair with my mom.  ~ Eric

IT Guy

I'm Gamy Hernandez.  I've been sewing successfully since 2019, but I have a bad habit of collecting crafts and supplies. I can hand and machine knit, crochet, spin, and more. I specialize in vintage and period costumes and usually get lost in the research.  I'm no expert by any metric, but I'm always happy to answer any questions relating to my hobbies and skills. ~ Gamy

Baby Lock Technician

After many years working as a maritime litigator in Miami, Florida, I semi-retired to Harrisonburg in the autumn of 2018 to be closer to family.  The following spring, I walked into Ragtime Fabrics for my first sewing lesson, and in the fall of 2021, I started working here.  After weeks of classes, I became the store's certified repair technician for Baby Lock, the brand we sell and the only one we service.  The repairs area is in the back of the store, and you can find me here on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Come by and "Hi" the next time you visit the store!  ~ Sarah

Teacher

I've been sewing since I was a young child.  I took an official sewing class about age 10, then was tutored by my mother who was an excellent seamstress.  Mostly, I'm a garment sewer and have worked for decades doing uniforms and costumes for Harrisonburg High School and Shenandoah Children's Choir (I'm still uniform coordinator for SVCC).  I've worked at Ragtime for 14 years, and enjoy teaching both kids and adults.  I love my co-workers and our interactions with our customers!

Teacher

I'm a retired elementary teacher who is thrilled to work with adults and kids without the pressure of accountability testing!  Garment sewing has been my passion since my teen years with a side of home decor and quilting ventures.  Being mostly self taught, I've made every possible sewing mistake, I think. My honey, Ted, and my cat, Tommy, keep me company at home.  I love spending time with friends and family, especially my kids & grandkids.  Since 2016, Ragtime has been much more than just a place to work; my coworkers & our customers feel like my second family. ~ Kathy

Newest Employee

I began sewing as a teenager because I wanted clothes that were fashionable but that I could afford and, more importantly, fit me.  Fit and fashion are still important to me, but what I especially love is that sewing combines my creative desire for fun, current trends and my problem solving skills that come into play when making a garment fit its owner well.  The best part of working here at Ragtime has been the expertise of my co-workers - each has a speciality that is challenging me to try new things.  I’m learning a lot and having fun too! ~ Terry

Angel Investor

I'm a retired nurse who moved to Harrisonburg 4 years ago.  When I found Ragtime, I fell in love with sewing again!  I invested with the old Ragtime, and then when we became employee owned, I invested again.  I love this place!  The peace and tranquility feed my soul.  Putting down roots in this community has been a blessing to me.  ~ Nancy

Angel Investor

I'm retired from a career as an art potter, and now I focus my creative energies on quilts and garments for my family.  Most days, you'll find me in the corner of the classroom putting together my latest quilt.  As a long-time customer at Ragtime, I just couldn't stand the idea of this business closing, so I pitched in when the employees decided to save the store.
